{"id":21676,"date":"2019-09-25T09:07:18","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T08:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fifteen-staging.fifteen.dev\/blog\/the-power-of-voice-search\/"},"modified":"2024-09-24T16:32:31","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T15:32:31","slug":"the-power-of-voice-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/blog\/the-power-of-voice-search\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Voice Search"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\r\n<p>I went to a design conference and a few years ago and never had the opportunity to express my feelings about Voice search and power it has on our society.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The rise of voice search<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Approximately 20% of quotes through mobile phones are done through voice and where this number is expected to increase so much, it\u2019s so important the awareness and effects that this may have. With virtual technology increasingly important, we are seeing a trend that is revolutionising people\u2019s search patterns for content. This rise in using voice for search is getting to the point that businesses should be starting to take voice search more serious. What&#8217;s more, businesses should think about where they fit in with customers&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/web-design-services\/ux-user-experience\/\">UX<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/digital-marketing\/seo\/\">SEO<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what is Voice Search?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In its basic form Voice search is something that allows a user of a product to simply use their voice to command a device to search the internet or interact with an application.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But in the broader sense voice search is using keywords query information available on the internet. Instead of typing queries into a search box you just state them into a voice-activated device.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Voice-Search-flow-chart-Fifteen-Design-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19182\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Voice-Search-flow-chart-Fifteen-Design-1-700x359.jpg\" alt=\"Voice Search flow chart Fifteen Design\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Using your voice to search involves you to be very interactive. It takes several interactions to make the system you are using to better understand the questions that have been asked of it. This is normally what you would do to guess someone\u2019s personality, asking them questions in the right way will give you a better understanding of the person.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 3 main voice assistants<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Searching without typing allows for greater accessibility without having to lift a thumb. There are many search bots out there however there are 3 main ones that dominate the market.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><a title=\"Apple Siri\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/uk\/siri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple &#8211; Siri<\/a><\/li>\r\n<li><a title=\"Google Assistant\" href=\"https:\/\/assistant.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google &#8211; Assistant<\/a><\/li>\r\n<li>Amazon &#8211; Alexa<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do voice assistants work?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Input into these machines is known as automatic speech recognition and for the output, it gives you the text-speech. In many cases, a device that uses this would have to be awoken by using trigger words.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Once these words have been spoken aloud then the device will be fully reactive in listening out for what you\u2019re asking it to do. Depending on the device and the output skills the device will return the results, all of this can be done without the device having a screen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Amazon-Echo-Fifteen-Design-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19183\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Amazon-Echo-Fifteen-Design-1-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Echo Fifteen Design\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So now we know how it works and what voice search is all about, why is the market so caught up on them? Plus, what are these companies (knowing full well they could be listening to us) wanting the public to buy into it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The benefits of voice search<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Convenience is the main draw. It&#8217;s easier to ask for information if you&#8217;re lounging on the couch or preparing dinner. According to Hitwise (a leading marketing company providing data on visitor trends and search behaviour), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewebmaster.com\/seo\/2017\/may\/2\/60-percent-online-searches-mobile-devices\/#targetText=According%20to%20a%20recent%20report,and%20Beverage)%20reaching%2072%20percent.\">nearly 60% of the searches<\/a> are now performed on a mobile device.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Like I\u2019ve mentioned before, using this kind of technology can get information quicker, a definite perk in this fast-paced society. You\u2019re also able to<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>set reminders<\/li>\r\n<li>make calls<\/li>\r\n<li>write messages via dictation<\/li>\r\n<li>ask them play your favourite tracks<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>With users becoming more aware of this, it\u2019s not a wonder how people have found voice searching or voice typing easier to use than physical typing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>What\u2019s more, this will only increase in popularity. I think voice search is the next step in the technology evolution. It\u2019s a small one, but it\u2019s massive at the same time so knowing how it all works within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/web-design-services\/ux-user-experience\/\">UX<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/digital-marketing\/seo\/\">SEO<\/a> can be very beneficial for any digital campaign.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Google-Home-Mini-Fifteen-Design-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19184\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Google-Home-Mini-Fifteen-Design-1-700x468.jpg\" alt=\"Google Home Mini Fifteen Design\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does it matter to my business?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>With mobile devices, voice search is being used more for queries rather than traditional searches then why not stay miles ahead with your competitors? Three core factors play well into the success of voice search with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/digital-marketing\/seo\/local-seo\/\">local business<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>What\u2019s the proximity of you and the searcher?<\/li>\r\n<li>What sort of engagement is there with the consumer?<\/li>\r\n<li>How is the business ranking in search?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Studies suggest that by the year 2020 (which is only a year away) that just over <a href=\"https:\/\/justcreative.com\/2019\/03\/14\/voice-search-optimization\/#targetText=In%20fact%2C%20pages%20appearing%20as,on%20is%20optimized%20for%20speed.\">50% of searchable content will be searched by voice<\/a>. This is where businesses should take note and understand this important way of thinking and take care to get their results found on voice search engines.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The difference with this form of searching is in the style of the queries. Searching with your voice is conversational and completely different from traditional searches. When Voice searching some of the queries that go through the device are somewhat longer in details rather than typed searches. So to give you an example, when you\u2019re searching Google and you\u2019re wanting to search for \u2018Nottingham\u2019s Best Pubs\u2019 you\u2019ll probably use a full sentence instead of just keywords. For example; \u2018can you tell me the best pubs in Nottingham city centre area\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19189\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Google-Home-Lit-Up-Fifteen-Desin-1-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"Google Home Lit Up Fifteen Design\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To get better results searching is that business in voice search you will need to understand and adapt to new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/digital-marketing\/seo\/\">SEO strategies<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It\u2019s also apparent that the right context for searching is important, too, to evolve the search by voice. But what exactly needs to change? Below are ways in optimising your website to become better at voice search.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Your site should be friendly with mobile devices\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/web-design-services\/\">Create a website<\/a> that is mobile friendly is THE most important part of all this because designing a website in this way will allow you to be noticeable on mobile devices.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Making crawlable content<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Make sure that the company\u2019s mobile website never blocks JavaScript, CSS, any images and any videos.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) DO NOT USE FLASH<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I don\u2019t mean the cleaning products, but Flash is unfortunately not viewable by many mobile web browsers. Flash has been around for a while but lately, it\u2019s been moved away due to the rising usage of Apples Safari web browser. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chromium.org\/flash-roadmap\">Google Chrome will no longer support Flash<\/a> in search result; it will not be indexed, from December 2020.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">4) Loading time<\/span><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">40% of shoppers will wait no more than three seconds until they bounce so, therefore, you\u2019ll need to provide a quicker way to enhance the UX.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">5) For the locals<\/span><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Voice searching is fast becoming the primary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifteendesign.co.uk\/digital-marketing\/seo\/local-seo\/\">search for local queries<\/a>. You need to rank quite high within your local area of search to allow for a better digital experience.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">6) Tracking<\/span><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Consumers still feel that the quickest method of getting ahold of someone is by calling. So if the consumer uses their voice searching device to find their local takeaway, they\u2019ll probably end up using type search or calling the restaurant to book a table rather than doing it through Google. Therefore tracking is somewhat important in helping a business to identify what channels or adverts should be used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">7) FAQs<\/span><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One very important asset to have for voice search is succinct answers to their questions. A FAQs page is where users find the answers they need very quickly to the most common questions. Many voice search queries start with the where what, why, who and how.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019m going to eat my own words\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Google (as I am normally an Apple enthusiast) has led this whole voice searching and sharing these would maybe change your mind too on using a device such as Google assistant. It\u2019s for sure starting to change my mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Google-Home-Logo-on-Phone-Fifteen-Design-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19190\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fifteen-uploads\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Google-Home-Logo-on-Phone-Fifteen-Design-1-700x466.jpg\" alt=\"Google Home Logo on Phone Fifteen Design \" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Google and their mighty thinkers have worked on some amazing things throughout the years and it\u2019s just getting better.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Google Assistant makes table reservations<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Making a simple table reservation over the phone with person to person interaction is now a thing of the past. You heard me right. You\u2019ll never need to book a table again, Google assistants can do that for you in the background. All you have to do is let Google Assist know that you would like to book a table at a certain restaurant, with a time, date, and number of guests. Then it\u2019ll call the restaurant for you &#8211; speak to the person at the end of the phone and book a table for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019ll then prompt you with a message to say it\u2019s done. Voice expands optimisation efforts and shows how you can become more relevant to local and international audiences.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where next for voice search?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There are many reasons why voice searching technology is such a pioneering piece of digital development. This allows people who are not capable of using a computer to communicate with others faster.
